History
Long before whiskey dominated American cocktails, rum was the spirit of choice in taverns across the colonies. The Old Fashioned, spirit, sugar, water, bitters, was originally made with whatever base spirit was available, which in many ports meant rum. The modern Rum Old Fashioned is a tribute to that early era, capturing the warmth and richness of aged rum while maintaining the elegant simplicity of the classic. Its caramel, vanilla, and oak notes make it an especially lush sipper.
What Cacao Bitters Bring to the Drink
Cacao bitters deepen the rum’s natural sweetness with chocolate, spice, and aromatic warmth. They highlight the molasses character in the rum and give the drink a velvety richness without making it sweet. The bitters add a subtle dessert-like aroma, turning the cocktail into a sophisticated after-dinner drink with layers of dark chocolate and oak.
